Cricket Fever: The Hottest New Game in Town

Cricket is one of the oldest sports in the world, but it is also one of the most popular. The game has origins in England and is now played all over the world. Cricket fever is sweeping the globe, and there are few places that remain untouched by its allure.

What is cricket? Cricket is a team sport that is played with a bat and ball. The object of the game is to score as many runs as possible, either by batting or running between wickets. Two teams of 11 players take turns batting and fielding.

The game can be quite complex, with many rules that govern how players can interact with the ball and each other. However, for those just getting started, here are the basics:

There are two types of cricket: Test Match cricket and One Day Internationals (ODI). Test Match cricket is the longer form of the game, typically lasting up to five days. ODI cricket is played over a period of one day, with each team batting for a maximum of 50 overs.

In order to score runs, players must hit the ball with their bats and run to the opposite end of the pitch. The batsman must then return to their original end before their partner can come out to bat. If they get out, their teammate takes their place at the opposite end of the pitch.

The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. There are various ways to win or draw a cricket match, which can get quite complex. For more information on all the different outcomes, check out this page on Cricket-Fever.com.

Now that you have an overview of cricket, let's take a look at why it's become such a global phenomenon in recent years:

1) It's Exciting! 2) It's Complex!

3) It Unites Countries!

Are You Ready For Cricket Fever?

With one of the most awaited cricket tournaments around the corner, it is time to gear up for Cricket Fever! The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 is scheduled to take place in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July. This will be the 12th edition of the Cricket World Cup, and the first time that the tournament will be hosted by two countries.

A total of 48 matches will be played in 11 venues, with 10 teams competing for the title. Defending champions Australia will be up against Afghanistan in their opening match on 1 June at Bristol County Ground. Following are some updates on the teams participating in this year's World Cup:

Australia

The defending champions had a mixed bag of results leading up to the World Cup. They had a 5-0 loss against England in an ODI series in January 2019, but then registered comprehensive victories over Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Steve Smith and David Warner are back with the team after serving one-year bans for their role in ball tampering. Warner has scored 8 centuries in ODIs at Hampshire's Rose Bowl, which will be one of the venues for the tournament. Australia are placed in Group B along with Afghanistan, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

England

Hosts England have been playing good cricket since their dismal performance at the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. They reached the final of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where they lost to Australia. In November 2018, they toured Sri Lanka and registered a sweep across all formats of the game. Captain Eoin Morgan has been in good form with both bat and ball, while Joe Root is also among runs. England are placed in Group A along with Bangladesh, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

India

India have been one of the top teams in world cricket for some time now. Virat Kohli has been exceptional as captain and batsman across all formats of the game. Rohit Sharma has also been among runs and is currently second on the list of most ODI centuries behind Sachin Tendulkar. Jasprit Bumrah has emerged as one of India's best fast bowlers and is currently No.1 on ICC's ODI rankings for bowlers. India are placed in Group A along with Bangladesh, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

Pakistan

Pakistan had a disastrous tour of New Zealand early this year, where they lost all three ODIs and two T20Is played between January and February 2019. However, they came back strongly to win five out of six matches against England across all formats played later that month/early March 2019). With Mohammad Amir returning to international cricket post his ban (and being consistent with his bowling), Sarfaraz Ahmed being Pakistan's longest-serving captain ever, Shadab Khan (who was rested for New Zealand tour) coming back into contention along with Hasan Ali – Pakistan seem to have a settled squad for CWC19 despite not being among top 3 teams according to odds by Betfair Sportsbook . Pakistan are placed in Group B along with Australia, West Indies and Zimbabwe .

South Africa

South Africa have some experienced players in their squad like Hashim Amla (currently third on list of most ODI centuries), Faf du Plessis (captain) AB de Villiers (retired from international cricket recently but could come back into consideration if conditions suit), JP Duminy etc., Dale Steyn make a comeback after missing out on ICC Champions Trophy 2017 due to injury,. They also have Kagiso Rabada who is currently No 2 on ICC's ODI rankings for bowlers . Proteas are placed in Group B along with India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka .

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka were whitewashed by India when they toured there recently but they do have some quality players like Angelo Mathews (c), Upul Tharanga (opener), Niroshan Dickwella etc., Lasith Malinga makes a return to 50-over cricket post his stint playing only T20 cricket . Recently retired Tillakaratne Dilshan could also make a return as an interim player during WC2019 . Sri Lanka are placed in Group A along with England, South Africa and Bangladesh .
